- MESSAGE COMMANDS
- ----------------
-
- J - Jump to a new message Forum. You will be shown a list of available
- forums and will then enter the forum number you wish to go to.
-
- N - Newscan. The Newscan will scan all message subs and individually show
- you each new message. You can configure your Newscan from the D-efaults
- menu to include only the message subs you wish.
-
- P - Post. This will allow you to post a message in the message sub you are
- currently in. You should select the appropriate message sub number before
- typing P to post.
-
- Q - Quickscan current message sub. This will individually show you all new
- messages on the current message sub. It is just like the N-ewscan except that
- it will show only the messages on the current sub.
-
- R - Remove. This allows you to remove messages you have previously posted
- on the current sub. Hermes will show you a list of all message numbers
- you have posted in the sub and you then select the number of the message to
- remove.
-
- S - Scan messages titles on the current message sub. The BBS will first ask
- you what message number you want to start from and will then give you the
- titles of the next 10 messages from the number entered. You can then enter
- the message number to read or type T for another 10 titles.
-
- Z - Express newscan. This will read new messages on all selected message
- subs, but without pausing between messages. This is useful to quickly
- capture all new messages. You could then log off, and call back later with
- a reply that has been written off-line.
-
- * - List all message subs in the current Forum that you have access to.
-
- Number - Typing a number will send you to that message sub number.
-
- + or - - The + and - commands will send you to the next higher/lower message
- sub in the current Forum.
-

- a message or mail. You will be presented with the upload commands to transfer
- your text. After uploading, the next message posted or mail sent will have
- the message text automatically inserted.

- unread. After doing this all messages on the BBS will show up as "new".
-
- //Catchup - This resets your "message pointers" to show all messages as being
- read. After doing this no new messages would show up during a Newscan or
- Quickscan. This will keep you from reading very old messages when first
- logging on a BBS as a new user.
-
-
- MAIL COMMANDS
- -------------
-
- E - E-mail Send command. You will be able to send mail to other users.

- to and then will ask for the title of the message before putting you in
- the text editor to write your message text.
-
- F - Feedback. This enables you to send a letter to the sysop. If the BBS
- has more than one person set up to receive feedback, you can select which
- person to send the mail to. Other than this, sending feedback is just like

- K - Kill old E-Mail. This will allow you to delete mail you have previously
- sent. You will be prompted with additional commands to read and delete
- any piece of mail you sent that is still on-line.
-
- M - read Mail. This lets you read mail addressed to you.
-
- /E - E-mail to more than one user. This will let you send the same piece

- or numbers of all the people you wish to send the mail to.
-
-
- SYSTEM COMMANDS
- ----------------
-
- A - Auto-message. This allows you to display and, if allowed, to change the
- auto-message seen when users first log on.
-
- B - BBS list. This will allow you to display other BBS numbers and to add
- other systems to the list.

- such as your screen size, ANSI or text menus, password, signature macro,
- screen pauses, and the message subs you want included in a Newscan.
-

-
- O - Off the system. This logs you off the BBS.

- T - File Transfers. This command sends you to the File Transfer menu. You
- can search, list, upload and download files from that menu.
-
- U - User list. This displays a list of users of this BBS.
-
- V - Vote. If the Ballot Box external is on-line, this will allow you to
- access the voting external to vote on sysop and user-entered questions.
-
- W - Who's On/Chat. This will give you additional commands to see who is
- on-line, send a message to other nodes, and enter the chat room where you
- can "talk" with other users in the chat room. You should first send a
- message to invite another user to the chat room. When you first enter the
- chat room you will be shown the chat commands.
-
- X - eXpert mode. This will toggle OFF/ON the display of the main menu after
- each prompt. For most efficient operation, you should turn this off.
-
- Y - Your info. Information about your account on this system is displayed.
-
- . - Externals. This command will send you to the Externals menu where you
- can select other applications to run. These are additional items added by
- each sysop and the number and type will vary from system to system.
-
- ? - This Menu. This will display the Main Menu.
-
- Control O - This displays this context-sensitive On-line Help display.
-
- Control T - This displays the current time, the time you have been on-line,
- and your time remaining before forced logoff.

- is being used, text may continue to be displayed until the modem's buffer is
- emptied.
-
- 2
-
- SYSTEM COMMANDS
- --------------
-
- C - Chat with the sysop. If used during "Sysop Available" hours set up on

- extended descriptions during the F-ind command.
-
- Y - Your Transfer Stats. This displays all transfer info such as number
- and size of files uploaded and downloaded as well as other information and
- ratios.
-
- ? - This Menu. This will display the Transfer Menu.
-
- Control O - This displays this context-sensitive On-line Help display.
-
- Control T - This displays the current time, the time you have been on-line,
- and your time remaining before forced logoff.
-
- Spacebar - Abort. This aborts a text or file listing. If a high speed modem
- is being used, text may continue to be displayed until the modem's buffer is
- emptied.
-
-
- FILE TRANSFER
- -------------
-
- Batch Commands - This will show you a sub-menu of the batch transfer commands.
-
- D - Download a file from the current directory. You may enter global filename
- characters, such as "*.PAS", and you may download all .PAS files. After
- listing out information on each matching file, you will be asked for the
- protocol you wish to use. If you decide you do not wish to download it,
- hit "Q" or "0", and you will not.
-
- U - Upload a file to the current directory. You will be prompted for the
- filename, a short description and an extended description (10 lines maximum).
- You will then be shown the transfer protocols by which the
- file is to be transferred. A ? at that prompt will show all available
- protocols.
-
- R - Remove file. You can only remove a file that you uploaded. You will be
- prompted for the filename and then shown the file and asked to confirm the
- deletion. All files you remove will also cause any upload credit to be
- removed too.
-
- Z - Upload to the sysop. This command works like the U-pload command except
- that the file is automatically placed in the Sysop transfer directory, and
- is not accessible by other callers.
-
-
- FILE SEARCHING
- -------------
-
- F - Find Description. This command will search for matching text in the
- descriptions, and, if selected from your Transfer Defaults, the extended
- descriptions as well. You will be prompted to enter the text that you want
- to find. You can enter a partial name as the BBS will list all files that
- match the text whether a full name or not.
-
- J - Jump to Area #. This allows you to go to another transfer Area. The BBS
- will show you all areas you have access to. You should then enter the Area
- you wish to go to.
-
- L - List Files in Directory. This will list matching files ONLY in the
- current directory. You will be prompted for the full or partial filename.
- You can enter any part of a name and the BBS will return all matching text
- in the filename. If you want to list all files in the directory, do not
- enter any name at the prompt.
-
- S - Search for matching files in ALL directories. You will be prompted
- for the full or partial filename. You can enter any part of a name and the
- BBS will return all matching text in the filename. If you want to display
- all files on the BBS, do not enter any name at the prompt.
-
- N - New Scan all Directories. This will list all new files since your last
- logon. You will be prompted whether to list only new files in the current
- directory or the entire BBS.
-
- P - Set New Scan Date. If you wish to see all new files after a certain date,
- enter the starting date for the new file search. Then when you enter N to
- scan new files, the date used will be the date you just entered rather than
- the date you last did a new file scan. When you enter the date, you must
- use two digits each for the month/day/year.
-
- * - List Directories. This command will list all available directories in
- the current transfer Area.
-
- # - Number. Enter a number to go to that transfer Directory.
-
- 3
-
- This command will sound a chime to attract the attention of the sysop to
- your chat request. You will be prompted to enter the reason for the chat.
- Many sysops don't heed chat requests that appear to be meaningless or a
- waste of their time, so it is important and polite to have a good reason
- to chat on most systems. You can turn the chat request off by hitting C
- again. If you do not wish to page the sysop, just hit enter now.
-
- 4
-
- Here you may change certain information about your terminal and the way you
- want the BBS to respond to you. The options are:
-
- 1. Screen size. The screen width is usually 40 or 80, although some terminals
- use 32 or 64. This information is used to format messages for your screen
- size. The number of lines on your display is also asked for. Most
- computers have 25 lines per screen.
-
- 2. ANSI graphics. If your terminal supports ANSI graphics, you should
- have this option set ON. It will allow the BBS to change the color of
- text on your screen and move the cursor around more efficiently. If you
- have ANSI graphics selected, you will also have to select color or a black
- and white display.
-
- 3. Pause on screen. If you are using a high-speed modem, information may
- scroll off the screen faster than you can read it. By turning pauses on,
- the BBS will pause after each screenfull of text is sent (based on the number
- of lines you set your screen size to). Hitting any key will cause the BBS
- to send another screenfull of text.
-
- 4. Mailbox. You can forward your mail to another user by selecting this
- option and entering the user that you want your mail forwarded to. This
- might be used if you will be on vacation another person will answer your
- mail during this time.
-
- 5. Screen Clears. This toggles screen clears off/on. If you have screen
- clears on, before a menu or text is sent a screen clear is sent. This
- results in the old text being removed and new text starting from the top
- of the screen. If screen clears are off, additional text is just added
- to the end of the previous text and old text will scroll off the top of
- the screen.
-
- 6. Configure Q-scan. This lets you identify which sub-boards you want to
- include in your Newscan of messages. You will first select a Forum and then
- toggle the message subs on/off. Any sub with the * symbol before the number
- is included in the Newscan.
-
- 7. Change password. If you want to change your password, this option
- should be used. You will first be prompted for your present password and
- then will be asked to enter your new password twice for verification. Be
- sure to make a record of your new password or you won't be able to access
- your account.
-
- 8. Notify login/out. This toggles the notification on/off. If you have
- "Yes" selected, you will receive notification of other users logging on and
- off the BBS. If "Off" is selected, the notification is suppressed.
-
- 9. Computer type. This shows the computer type you have indicated previously.
- If you select this, the BBS will display the computer types list for this
- BBS. You should then select your new computer type.
-
- 10. Scan New Messages at Logon. If this is set to "Yes", each time you
- log on the BBS you will ask if you want to scan for new messages addressed
- to you. If this is set to "Off", the prompt is suppressed.
-
- 11. Change Signature. Selecting this will allow you to change your BBS
- "signature" that is entered with the /ESP command in messages and mail.
- You can have a 1 line signature that may include ANSI colors. See the
- Change Colors option to view a list of colors available.
-
- 12. Column Display Mode. This will toggle the listing of message subs,
- transfer directories and G-Files between a 1 column/2 column display.
-
- 13. Change Colors. If you have the ANSI graphics option enabled, you can
- select the colors you would like displayed for prompts, questions, etc.
- Several prompts will guide you through the settings.
-
- 5
- This feature enables you to send the same piece of mail to up to 20 different
- users. Enter the name or number of each user on a separate line and then
- enter a carriage return on a blank line to end the list. Then you will
- enter the message title and text just as in a regular piece of mail.
-
- 6
-
- You now are entering the title of a message or mail. The title should
- be a one-line description of your message.
-
- 7
-
- This lets you identify which sub-boards you want to include in your Newscan
- of messages. You will first select a Forum and then toggle the message subs
- on/off. Any sub with the * symbol before the number is included.
-
- 8
-
- If you have sent a piece of mail that you decide you actually didn't want to
- send, you may remove it with this command. Each un-read piece of mail you
- have sent will be shown individually, and you may delete any message. For
- each piece of mail, the destination user, title, and how many days it was
- sent will be printed out. Your options here are:
-
- R - Read the piece of mail.
-
- D - Delete it.
-
- N - Go on to the next piece.
-
- Q - Quit back to the main menu.
-
- 9
-
- You are being asked to enter either the full or just a partial name to
- search for. Hermes will show all filenames that match whatever you enter.
- Normally you should only enter the "core" part of a name since different
- spellings may keep the file from being shown as whatever you type must match
- exactly some part of the filename. To show all files, just enter a carriage
- return.
-
- 10
-
- You now have a listing of all mail sent to you. You can enter the number
- of the piece of mail you wish to start reading from, or you can just hit
- enter to read all the mail starting at the first piece.
-
- 11
-
- You are being asked where to start listing the titles of messages. You are
- given total number of messages in the message sub, and you may start the
- listing at any number between 1 and the number listed. The BBS will then
- show you the titles of the next 10 messages. From that point, enter the
- message number you want to read or T for another 10 titles. Entering Q will
- quit the title scan and take you back to the Main Menu.
-
- 12
-
- If you type Y for yes, you will be logged off the BBS. If you do not want
- to log off, type N for no.
-
- 13
-
- You are being asked to enter a date for new files. The date you enter here
- will be used when you do a new file search ("N"). The files listed in the
- search will be any that were uploaded on or after the date you specify.
-
- 14
-
- You are being asked to identify a user. You may enter the user's name
- or user number. Optionally, you may also enter only part of the user's
- name followed by a *, and the BBS will search through the user list for
- the first user matching that name.
-
- 15
-
- This allows you to remove a message you have posted. You have been given
- a list of messages you have posted on the current sub, and you should now
- enter the message number you want to delete. If you do not want to delete
- any of these messages, just enter a carriage return.
-
- 16
-
- This is the "message read" prompt. In the prompt line at the bottom of
- the screen, you are given the range of message numbers and the last message
- number you have read. If message threading is enabled for this message
- sub, you will also have the number of replies to this message listed.
-
- Your options are:
-
- <Carriage Return> - This reads the next message.
-
- # - Entering a number will read that message number.
-
- A - Auto-reply to last message. This will let you send E-mail to the
-
- person who wrote the current message you are seeing now.
-
- B - If you are in a Newscan, this will advance you to the next message sub
- without reading any further messages on this message sub.
-
- P - Post a message to this message sub.
-
- Q - Quit to the the Main Menu.
-
- R - Write a public reply to the last message.
-
- T - List the titles of the next 10 messages.
-
- 17
-
- After entering a filename to upload, the BBS will check for for a duplicate
- filename and that invalid characters are not in the name. If the name is
- accepted, you will be asked to verify you want to upload the file. If so,
- you will be asked for a one-line description of the file. The description
- should give some general information, such as what it does and/or what
- version it is. After entering the description, you will be asked if you
- want to enter an extended description (up to 10 lines in length). After
- leaving the extended description or entering N to not leave one, you will
- be asked what protocol you would like to use for the transfer. Enter "?"
- for a list of protocols available. After you enter the protocol number,
- he BBS will wait for you to start sending the file. If you get this far,
- and then don't want to upload, enter Ctrl-X to abort the transfer.
-
- 18
-
- The Node Commands prompt allows you to:
-
- L - List users that are on-line and show what node they are connected to.
-
- M - Send a message to a node. The BBS will ask you what node number to send
- the message to and then you will be able to type a 1 line message. You may
- use this to invite another user to meet you in the Chat Room.
-
- C - Enter the Chat Room. Once in the Chat Room, each line of text is sent
- to all others present. Chat Room commands include:
-
- /X - Exit Chat Room
- /U - Users on-line and their activity
- /H - Chat Room Help menu (these commands)
-
- 19
-
- The Auto-Message is read by all users when they first log on. You can do
- the following at this point:
-
- R - Read the current Auto-Message.
-
- W - Write a new Auto-Message if the sysop allows users to do this.
- The Auto-Message can be three lines long.
-
- A - Reply to current author of the Auto-Message. This will send mail to
- the author of the Auto-Message.
-
- 20
-
- To download a file, you must enter either the full or partial name of the
- file you want to download. The text you enter must exactly match either
- all or part a file on-line or the BBS will not be able to find it. For this
- reason it may be best to either copy a filename if you have just searched
- and found the file, or to enter just a part of the filename (to help insure
- a match). The BBS will individually show all filenames that do match if
- you just enter a partial name.
-
- After the BBS finds the first matching file, you will be given information
- about the file including size and estimated time required to download.
-
- You will then be asked what transfer protocol to use. Enter "?" for a list
- of protocols. If you do not wish to download this file, hit "0", and the
- BBS will continue to show the next matching file until there are no more
- matches. Type Q to Quit to the Transfer Menu. If you decide to download
- the file with ZMODEM Batch protocol, it will be added to a "queue." When
- you wish to download the files marked for Batch protocol, from the download
- main menu hit "B" for the Batch Download commands.
-
- 21
-
- Enter any text followed by a carriage return to search for matching text in
- the descriptions of files on-line. The BBS will also search through the
- extended descriptions if you have enabled this from your Transfer Defaults.
- The text is not case sensitive.
-
- 22
-
- The Batch Download menu gives you 4 options:
-
- D - Download the files marked for batch download.
-
- L - List the files marked for batch download.
-
- R - Remove a file from the queue (by its number).
-
- C - Clear the batch queue.
-
- NOTE: You must have a terminal program which supports batch downloading.
-
- 23
-
- If you have sent E-mail to anyone, here you can scan through each piece and
- read or delete it. If for some reason you decide not to send a certain piece
- of e-mail after sending it, just press the "D" key when that message shows up.
-
-
- 24
-
- Here you may specify which directories you want included in a Newscan
- of the transfer section. In the list, a "*" before the directory indicates
- that that directory will be newscanned. If you do not want a directory
- newscanned that is marked, just type the number of the directory, and it
- will be un-marked. To re-mark the directory, just enter the directory
- number again.
-
- 25
-
- Type R to read the BBS list and A (if allowed) to add a new BBS to the list.
-
- When adding a new system to the list, you will first be prompted for the
- phone number. You must enter the number in the form ###-###-####. You will
- then enter the BBS name and comments. After that you will be asked for the
- maximum modem speed of the BBS. Then you will be asked to enter a 4
- character system type (HRMS, WWIV, etc.) and finally a confirmation that
- the information is correct.
-
- 26
-
- This command will allow you to move a file from the current directory to
- another. You enter either the full or partial filename and the BBS will
- give you the first match and ask if you want to move the file. If you
- answer yes, the BBS will ask what what Area and then what Directory you
- want the file moved to. Enter a question mark to show a list of available
- Areas or Directories.
-
- 27
-
- At the Reply prompt you are first asked if you want to quote text from the
- current message. If you type Y (Yes), the BBS will then show you the first
- line of text from the previous message. You should type Y to quote it, N
- to skip it, and Q to quit quoting. You can recall the quoter from the text
- editor by typing /RQ at the beginning of a line of text.
-
- 28
- Your options, for each piece of mail that you have waiting, are:
-
- D - Delete the piece of mail.
- I - Ignore it. Keep it in your "mailbox" so you may come back and read it
- again later.
- R - Re-read the letter.
- A - Auto-reply to the letter. This deletes the letter, and enables you to
- send a letter in reply to whoever wrote it.
- S - Save the message and reply to it.
- F - Forward the mail. If you enter F, you will be asked for the name
- or number of the user to forward it to. If you decide not to forward
- it, just hit enter at this prompt.
- Q - Quit out of mail read, leaving the remaining letters in your mailbox.
-
- 29
-
- If you want all new mail addressed to you forwarded to another user, you
- should now answer "yes". You will then be prompted for the name or number
- of the user that you want to receive your mail.
-
- 30
-
- You can now change the foreground and background colors for your account.
- The colors used are determined by the category listed on the left and the
- current settings are listed to the right of each category. You will be
- prompted for the foreground color, background color, intense or normal
- color, and whether you want the text underlined. Note: "Intense" ANSI
- colors are not necessarily more vivid than their non-intense counterparts.
-
- 31
-
- This command allows you to remove a file that you uploaded. The file must
- be in the current directory. You first enter the full or partial filename,
- then the BBS will show you the first matching file and ask if you want
- to remove it. After answering, the BBS will show the next matching file.
- Any file that you remove will also delete the upload credit for it.
-
- 32
-
- This command allows you to rename a file that is on the BBS. The file you
- want to rename must be in the current directory. You should enter either
- the full or partial filename and the BBS will show the first matching file.
- You will be asked if you want to change the filename, description and the
- extended description. A carriage return at any of the prompts will leave
- that part as it currently is. After you complete this file, the BBS will
- show you the next matching file, if any.
-
- 33
-
- This menu allows you to set your transfer section defaults. You can set
- the following:
-
- 1 - This allows you to select your default file transfer protocol. If you
- select a default protocol, a carriage return will select this protocol when
- transferring. You can select a different protocol for a transfer by entering
- the appropriate number if you do not want to use the default protocol.
-
- 2 - This toggles off/on the option to automatically do a Newscan of the
- file transfer section after you complete a message Newscan.
-
- 3 - This toggles off/on the extended description listing when you Search or
- List files.
-
- 4 - This toggles off/on the addition of the extended descriptions when you
- select the Find Description command.
-
- 34
-
- The G-Files contain text files that you can read on-line. The G-Files are
- arranged in two levels; "Sections" and then "G-Files" within each section.
- At the first level you should enter the section number you wish to enter,
- then you should select the actual G-file number you want to read. Entering
- a question mark will show you the sections or G-Files as appropriate. To
- navigate from within a section back to the top level, type Q (Q-uit).
